Prep Sports: Let the Record-Breaking Begin

Everything in Hazel Green seems to revolve around the local high school. The weekend events, car washes and fundraisers all go towards helping the Trojans.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a small town in the Deep South if it didn’t have a strong football team. For one player, Chase Starling, it could be an even bigger year as he’s slated to break the touchdown record for a single game in Alabama, according to AL.com.

The junior made a whopping eight touchdowns on Friday’s game against Lee. Those touchdowns tie him with the current no. 2 record holders for the most touchdowns by an Alabama high school student in any given game, according to AL.com.

It’s not just on the field that he shines. In 2017, Chase was voted the Trojan teammate of the week. He’s also active in his church, The Harbour United Methodist Church in Meridianville, where Cody Gilliam is a youth pastor.

“He’s a great kid,” Cody said. “He’s one of those students who, without prompting, prays before every game and thanks God for everything he’s got. … He’s humble and has the humility of being a Christ-follower.”

The record is only nine touchdowns, so it is completely within the realm of possibility that Chase could exceed the state record before he graduates.
