Sparks flew out of one of Gloria Scott’s light fixtures. She’s 72, broke, and finally called an electrician for help when her overhead went all Vesuvius in the middle of the day.
John Kinney answered her call, only to find Gloria’s home in complete disrepair.
Things were so bad, Gloria wasn’t even alone in her house.
“There was extensive plumbing damage, there was holes in the ceiling, raccoons were getting in,” John said.
There was no consistent running water — she only turned it on every few days to flush the toilets — and the entryway was almost completely covered with overgrown bushes.
John knew he had to do something.
He enlisted a little help, and eventually raised $100,000 through a Facebook fundraiser entitled “Nice Old Lady Needs Help.” Local restaurants donated food, while contractors and landscapers volunteered time and materials. Soon enough, her home was fixed up so she could live out her days in a safe, sturdy house.
“She’s so happy, she’s got all types of new friends,” John said. “She’s out here making lunch for us, laughing, joking. It’s just a miracle to witness.”
