Free Meals Distributed in Huntsville

Even the most skilled of home chefs are getting tired of their own recipes by this point of the quarantine. Takeout is a good option, but can also get expensive fast. One MidCity restaurant, The Camp, is handing out 5,000 free meals on today, April 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at different locations throughout the city.

“I just wanted to have a way for people in Huntsville to have a meal together, anyone and everyone, together but separate until the next time we can commune in the same place,” said Ruth Mercado, head chef at The Camp.

The philanthropy is part of Operation Drumstick, a plan that started in Muscle Shoals to unite people even though they’re stuck at home.

“We also made a ton of different casseroles, a bunch of savory ones,” Ruth said. “I made a chili this morning. Even really just a hodgepodge of things that we have ingredients for. Right now I have a pot of Korean noodles, so that’s going in there!”

Each package will include four servings of food. Anyone is welcome, no questions asked.

Pickup locations follow:

  • The Camp at MidCity
  • Woody Anderson Ford
  • Huntsville Country Club
  • Venue Group Office, Washington Park Downtown
  • Schoel Engineering
  • St. Bartley Primitive Baptist Church

“It’s for anybody who needs it, who wants it,” Ruth said. “It’s for everybody!”
