We all know that 911 brings the police or fire department, but what does calling 211 do? In Huntsville, dialing 211 will connect you to United Way, where volunteers are waiting to connect you to government services, healthcare, legal services, transportation, food, education, housing, employment, clothing, family help and disaster relief.
The program wouldn’t be possible with the dedicated volunteers, men and women like Norm Harris, the recipient of one of the organization’s highest awards.
“We had our camera ready as United Way of Madison County in Huntsville Alabama leadership surprised Heart Center cardiovascular tech Norm Harris with their 211 HERO Award,” Huntsville Hospital representatives wrote on Facebook. “Norm completed United Way’s 211 Ambassadors training program and has made it his mission to educate the community about 211, a helpline that connects people in need with the local services that can help them. Way to go, Norm!”
Norm chimed in on the United Way of Madison County Facebook page.
“I’m very Thankful, Honored & Grateful for receiving the United Way 211ConnectsAlabama.org HERO Award today (August 20, 2020) at Huntsville Hospital,” Norm said.
